In its typical use as part of an occupant detection system, this sensor provides important data on the occupant of an automotive front passenger seat for use in air bag deployment calculations.  By detecting the loading force tension on the seat belt and outputting a proportional analog signal, the sensor prevents airbag deployment when the seat is empty. It also helps protect children from airbag-induced injury, preventing deployment when passenger weight falls below a pre-defined threshold.
